Goals of the Program
The goal of the Cook County-John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County Gastroenterology Training Program is to provide the Gastroenterology Fellow with the experience and training to acquire the competency of a specialist in the field. In so doing, the fellows will fulfill the requirements needed for Gastroenterology Board eligibility. It is the intention of this program to have its fellows obtain the GI-subspecialty Board certification.
The major emphasis of this program is clinical. During the three-year training, fellows will be able to master the comprehensive knowledge necessary to become a gastroenterology subspecialist. Since this field has undergone impressive growth in the past two decades, our training program has been expanded to allow the fellows to gain experience and competence in all the clinical skills and techniques expected of the mature, accomplished consultant capable of providing optimal patient care.
The fellow will acquire comprehensive knowledge of , gastrorointestinal disorders, hepatobiliary disorders, pancreastic diseases, motility, endoscopy training and nutrition as well as additional training time will allow fellows to participate in clinical or basic science research. In addition, our goal is that our graduates excel in their future academic or clinical practices and have a passing rate of 100% on the GI boards.
Our fellows receive their training in a state of the art facilities at the new Cook County Hospital. The endoscopy unit is supplied with the latest equipment. All trainees have access to training in all the standard endoscopic procedures in addition to more advanced procedures such as therapeutic endoscopy, ERCP, EUS, video capsule endoscopy, single balloon enteroscopy, manometry and pH monitoring. Our fellows receive additional training in ERCP and some of them do not require an additional 4th year because they reach the competence level during their three year fellowship. Fellows have additional training in hepatology and biliary disorders during their consultation rotations and their attendence of the GI and Liver Clinics.
Our program is affiliated with Rush University Medical Center. This affiliation provides our trainees a wider exposure to all aspects of Gastroenterology/Hepatology. By the end of their training, our fellows are expected to demonstrate sufficient professional ability to practice competently and independently.
