Program Director

Thank you for your interest in internal medicine residency training at the John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County (Cook County Hospital.) Our program boasts an international reputation as a leader in clinical education, with particular emphasis on clinical reasoning. Whether you desire a career in primary care, hospital medicine, or subspecialty medicine, the goal of our program is to prepare you with the best possible training. Towards that end, we offer diverse clinical experiences, a comprehensive didactic and discussion curriculum, and career development programs, all provided by highly skilled and knowledgeable faculty committed to resident education.

Housestaff are integrated members of the Department of Medicine. Through supervised management of all patients admitted to our inpatient wards, HIV, short stay, medical and cardiac intensive care units, residents diagnose and treat diseases others only read about in textbooks. On our subspecialty consult services and ambulatory rotations, residents learn from our own dedicated faculty, as well as faculty from our university affiliate, Rush Medical College. And in the general medicine clinic, our housestaff become the primary care physicians for their own panel of patients, providing residents the opportunity to practice preventive medicine and to provide continuity care for a variety of complex diseases. In addition to clinical care, housestaff are encouraged to conduct research and quality improvement projects, and to participate in the teaching of medical students who rotate on all our services.

Our program's greatest asset is our housestaff itself. Every year, we welcome trainees from around the world, who bring with them rich and diverse experiences. Our housestaff learn much from one another, not just about medicine, but about different cultures and the common human spirit.

I invite you to learn more about our program and would be happy to answer any questions that you may have. I sincerely hope that you consider Stroger Hospital of Cook County for your graduate medical training.
