The preliminary internal medicine year is intended to give a solid grounding in the principles and skills of Internal Medicine for those specializing in other fields. Preliminary medicine interns are integrated into the department - they are assigned to a home firm and have full access to the faculty and resources of the teaching program. While meeting the American Board of Internal Medicine's requirements for a year of Internal Medicine credit, preliminary interns are given extra flexibility in their schedule to pursue educational experiences in other clinical areas.
A sample schedule (13 four week blocks) for a Preliminary Internal Medicine intern includes :
- 5-6 rotations of general medicine inpatient care
- 1 rotation of MICU
- 1 rotation of ER (or another elective)
- 1 rotation of HIV inpatient ward
- 3-4 rotations of other electives
- 1 four-week block of vacation
Preliminary interns in past years have joined Emergency Medicine (often in our own nationally-recognized Emergency Medicine Program), Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Radiology, Neurology, Anesthesia, and other clinical fields. See the description of the Categorical Program for other aspects of resident life at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County.
