John Stroger Hospital (the new Cook County Hospital) is part of the Cook County Bureau of Health Services, the largest component of the safety net for health care in Chicago and suburban Cook County. ....more

Our historic training program continues to lead the way in education and indigent care. Our goal is to help develop outstanding clinical skills in inpatient and outpatient medicine. This prepares our graduates for continued fellowship training or careers as hospitalists/primary care internists.

Our residents acquire the fundamental skills for both subspecialty fellowship training and practice in general internal medicine through evidenced-based lectures, bedside teaching, and hands-on experience caring for patients with a wide spectrum of illnesses. In addition, some of the residents choose to participate in research during their second and third years of training.

Almost all the training is on-site at the John H. Stroger Hospital, which opened in December, 2002. We are located in Chicago, and the call schedule leaves plenty of time to explore and enjoy our wonderful city.

The Department of Medicine is actively involved in training and education. We offer training by a full-time attending physician staff. More than 100 Department of Medicine teaching attendings in 13 subspecialties supervise residents in General Medicine, as do the more than 35 attendings in the Division of General Medicine, Primary Care. ....more
Residents participate in a variety of research projects. Department of Medicine and the Collaborative Research Unit are involved in many research projects and receive research grants from a variety of institutions for conducting research studies affecting the Cook County population. For more information view our current or completed research projects.
